In the early nineteenth Century, the French scientist sadi Kano (Sadi karnot) first proposed the "Kano cycle" theory in the paper in 1824, which became the origin of heat pump technology. In 1852, British scientist Kelvin (L.Kelvin) proposed that the cryopreservation device could be used to heat the heat pump which was used for heating the reverse Kano cycle. He first proposed a formal heat pump system, which was then called "thermal multiplier". Since then, many scientists and engineers have done a lot of research on heat pumps for 80 years. In 1912, Zurich, Switzerland, successfully installed a set of heat pump equipment with water as a low source heat source for heating. This is the early water source heat pump system and the first set of heat pump systems in the world. The heat pump industry developed rapidly from 1940s to early 50s. The heat pump used by household heat pumps and industrial buildings began to enter the market, and the heat pump entered the early stage of development.

The field plays an important role in energy conservation and environmental protection.
21 世纪,随着“能源危机 ”出现,燃油价格忽升,经过改进发展成熟的热泵以其高效回收低温环境热能,节能环保的特点,重新登上历史舞台,成为当前最有价值的新能源科技。前国际热能署专门成立国际热泵中心,设立热泵推广工程(Heat Pump Programme),向世界上各国推广协调热泵技术的应用和发展。美、加、瑞典、德、日、韩等国政府均发出专门官方指引,促进热泵技术的社会应用。相对世界热泵的发展,中国热泵的研究工作起步约晚20-30年左右。新中国成立后,随着工业建设新高潮的到来,热泵技术才开始引入中国。
